————————————————————————————————————

The friend who cares much about this blog showed me a very interesting band that I’m going to present right now. Strange that their album has been on Soundcloud for over a year, but I knew nothing about their very existence until recently. This points out the problem of inadequate information diffusion quite clearly once more.

Innerhiss was born in early 2012, but it is practically a continuation of Comic Condition and Tako + Green Mama. Throughout those 3 projects line-up change has been minimal, but sound has still undergone quite an evolution from driving, riff-filled non-trivially arranged post-grunge /hard rock of original Green Mama line-up (see rev. #39) to Innerhiss’ female-fronted, electric piano-led, alt.rock-mixed melodic crossover prog.

The songs on the album are structurally based on vocal lines, but instrumental excursions and arrangement nuances get enough attention to step out from the shadow. Omnipresent electric piano and strange, stripped-down sound are easily observed, but it must be said that musicians managed to use technologic limitations in their music’s favor: for example, electric drums sound as the integral part of album’s atmosphere, and the bareness of background caused by scarcity of strings is filled by short guitar passages / riffs, piano and pinpoint vocals. As a result album sounds quite direct, moody and close to the listener, without detachedness so typical of modern atmospheric prog.

Band is not shy to contrast the mainstream song format with musical dissonances and heaviness. Moreover, it comes out so naturally that music remains easily to comprehend and pleasurable. The first 4 songs would serve as a perfect example, where near the end of the songs, instrumentation escapes the shackles of fronting vocals, and develops them to impressive climaxes. Still, Tako Davitashvili’s vocals are perhaps the main determinant of the band’s sound: her presentation of jazzy vocal lines with trip-hop mannerism is often a stimulus for the respective instrumental arrangements.

Overall, we have a good and equal album, with a couple of very impressive moments (EnchantedButterflyBreaking BoundsChanging SignsTime). Stripped-down sound and a relative lack of its variation might not provide a definite comfort upon the first listen, but this effect will vanish on subsequent listens: it is a definite grower. This work presents nothing revolutionary, but the band clearly expresses their own vision of one of the most modern progressive rock styles, while retaining attractiveness for the broad audience. This lets us to rate this album highly and wait for Innerhiss’ creative development with much interest – the potential is clear. My recommendations go to all who love female-fronted crossover prog with the touch of alternative.
