6,5 / 10.

There were a couple of state-sponsored variety orchestras in Soviet Georgia. Georgian State Variety Orchestra “Rero” was without a doubt the most popular and long-lived of all. It was created in 1956, directed by Konstantin Pevzner and later by Givi Gachechiladze and then Amiran Ebralidze. Orchestra’s main function was to accompany the pop / variety singers, so this collective of 30 musicians made only a few independent recordings: 2 LPs and a couple of singles, mostly issued in the second half of the 70s.

Out of these two LPs, the second one is the best. Side A consists of short, light pop songs, some funked up and some under a slight jazz/rock influence. Nothing special, but “Lurji Otsneba” [2] is a very beautiful ballad and “Ra Yofila Guria” [4] blends folklore and light jazz/rock in the way characteristic for Georgian rock bands of that period. The side is closed by “Chven Gvixaria” [5], a kind of big band composition.

Side B features two pieces. One is the cover of a Keith Mansfield’s “L-Dopa” (does it refer to the Parkinson disease drug?!), which is really well played but us very close to Maynard Ferguson’s fusion version. Album is closed by a slightly bluesy version of Ave Maria for some reason sung in Russian.

In all, this is an average album. However it has high rarity value (only a couple of thousand copies pressed) and could go for a couple of listens at least thanks to a long fusion version of L-Dopa and some good songs on the Side A. If you happen to love light pop built on funky grooves, you’re gonna like this album more than me. For my part, I’d rate this work as:

6,5 / 10.
