Twas the new moon by Matsuo Basho
Translated by William George Aston and published in A History of Japanese Literature, Chapter IV (1899). Twas the new moon was written by Matsuo Basho, year unknown. Basho was considered the master of the haiku poetry form.
‘Twas the new moon!
Since then I waited—
And lo! to-night!
[I have my reward!]
