The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Brunett created an inspirational tale of transformation and empowerment. Mary Lennox, a sickly and contrary little girl, is orphaned to dim prospects in a gloomy English manor – her only friend is a bed-ridden boy named Colin whose prospects may be dimmer than hers. But when Mary finds the key to a Secret Garden, the magical powers of transformation fall within her reach.

The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young English girl who returns to England from India, after losing both her parents in a cholera epidemic. She is given to the care of her uncle Archibald Craven, whom she has never met, and when she arrives at his house in Yorkshire, she is rude, stubborn and prone to temper tantrums. However, she undergoes a transformation when she learns of the tragedies that have befallen her uncle. She then discovers a charming walled garden which is always kept locked. The mystery deepens when she hears sounds of sobbing from somewhere within her uncle’s vast mansion.
