Translated by William George Aston and published in A History of Japanese Literature, Chapter IV (1899). Clouds will separate us was written by Matsuo Basho in 1671. Basho was considered the master of the haiku poetry form.

Clouds will separate us —
the time to part has come now.
Wild goose flies away…
