Requiem For Deranged Robot

————————————————————————————————————

When you touch the topic of Georgian electronic music, members of “Goslab” (a creative commune which included Nika Machaidze, Tusia Beridze and Gogi Dzodzuashvili) and associated cybernetic IDM usually come to listeners’ minds first. No surprise, because those three musicians regularly released electronic artistically exquisite records that were full of ideas, yet easily comprehensible.

Nika Machaidze’s albums have been issued under a couple of pseudonyms (NikakoiGoslabErast). Still, despite his musical diversity, he mostly orbited IDM. The album I’m going to present right now sees him steer away from his homeground style and I think it resulted in the best work in his discography.

Requiem For Deranged Robot is a double album. CD1 contains two long compositions.  System Switch Off is based on electrically modulated, fragmented, almost indeterminant piano themes. Listener is put into a certain kind of binary detachment – it seems just as those small fragments should be decoded into new, yet not experienced feeling. Interpret it by yourself – I’d just like to tell that it is one of my all-time favourites in electronic music.

Disarrange aims for the similar atmosphere, but deep background chords add up the strong space effect to this cyber-randomness. It creates interesting contrast, as if the same concept is explored from opposite sides.

Second disc consists of twelve Ghostfiles. They have musically much in common with the first disc, but here it’s more cinematic mood that predominates. Throughout all twelve pieces, music slowly morphs around masked melodic themes and it’s enough to create the emotional diversity. So, the second disc, while not as monumental as the first one, is still sounds just as fresh and exciting.

Despite the plenty of digital ambient music in the new century, to be honest, I at trouble finding albums that would sound similar to it. From the music I’m aware of, the closest I can get is Alva Noto’s solo albums or Alva Noto / Ryuichi Sakamoto collaborations, so special recommendations to those who like aforementioned artists. To put it short, this is one of my fave electronic albums of 21st century – I think it is the masterpiece of this particular style. So I’ll rate it accordingly.

10 / 10.
